Ex-UN investigator Gerry Lane survives the Philadelphia outbreak, a rooftop extraction in Newark, the fall of Jerusalem, and a plane crash outside Cardiff that leaves him impaled by shrapnel. At the WHO lab he theorizes that the undead ignore the terminally ill, so with a zombie blocking the vault door he injects himself with a lethal but curable pathogen, walks untouched through the infected wing, and is cured. He reaches his family at a Nova Scotia safe zone as a 'camouflage' vaccine turns the tide.
Comes close several times. The famously reshot third act replaced a bleaker Moscow ending in which Gerry also survived.
