In April 1945 Wardaddy's immobilized Sherman, 'Fury', makes a suicidal last stand at a crossroads against a Waffen-SS battalion. As ammo runs out he is hit by a German sniper, then, bleeding out inside the turret, orders Norman to escape through the floor hatch. SS troops drop stick grenades into the tank and the blasts kill him. The next morning Norman climbs back in and covers his corpse with his jacket before US reinforcements find him.
He is the only member of the crew besides Norman who survives long enough to make the final choice; the rest of the crew die one by one in the same battle.
