Roland, a blocked American writer, spends a 1970s French seaside holiday drinking while his wife Vanessa (Angelina Jolie) grieves. The pair spy on newlyweds through a hole in the wall, Vanessa tries to seduce the young husband, and Roland punches him. The marriage's wound turns out to be Vanessa's miscarriages and infertility. They reconcile, Roland finishes his book about her, and they leave the hotel together, alive and slightly more hopeful.
