Austrian mountaineer Harrer is interned by the British in India, escapes to Tibet, and becomes tutor and friend to the young Dalai Lama. When China invades in 1950 he leaves Tibet and returns to Austria, where he reconciles with the son who once rejected him. The film closes with the two climbing together.
The real Harrer lived until 2006.
