Canadian intelligence officer Max Vatan marries French Resistance fighter Marianne after their Casablanca assassination mission, then learns she may be a German spy. Ordered to execute her if the 'blue dye' test proves it, Max instead kills her handlers and tries to fly her out. As military police close in on the airfield, Marianne tells Max she loves him, asks him to care for their daughter, and shoots herself. Max survives and raises Anna on a ranch in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
