Roy travels to Neptune to stop the antimatter surges from his father's lost Lima Project station. He finds his father Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones) alive and unrepentant after killing his mutinous crew, plants a nuclear charge, and tries to bring him home. Clifford instead pushes off into space and asks to be let go; Roy releases the tether and watches him drift away. Roy uses the blast to slingshot back to Earth, where he lands safely and reconnects with his estranged wife.
His father dies; Roy survives everything, including a Moon pirate chase and a rabid space baboon.
