The Canadian carpenter who mails the letter that frees Solomon.
Late in the film, Canadian itinerant laborer Samuel Bass arrives at Edwin Epps's plantation to build a gazebo alongside Solomon Northup and openly argues with Epps that slavery is an abomination. After Solomon confides that he is a kidnapped free man, Bass risks his life to write to Solomon's friends in Saratoga, New York. The letter brings the sheriff and shopkeeper Mr. Parker to the plantation, and Solomon is freed after twelve years. Bass simply finishes his work and departs unharmed.
Small but pivotal role near the end of the film; Pitt also produced through Plan B.
