Fired by the President after a Rolling Stone exposé.
McMahon, a swaggering four-star general (a thinly veiled Stanley McChrystal), arrives in Afghanistan in 2009 to 'win' the war and pushes for a 40,000-troop surge. He leaks his assessment, mouths off about the President, and lets a Rolling Stone reporter embed with his staff. The resulting article exposes his contempt for civilian leadership and he is summoned to Washington and relieved of command, quietly lining up a consultant gig on the way out. A new general is appointed to keep the war going.
