Rookie detective Mills hunts the seven-deadly-sins killer John Doe alongside Somerset. In the desert finale a delivery box arrives containing the head of Mills' pregnant wife Tracy; Doe confesses he is 'envy' and that Mills must become 'wrath'. Mills shoots Doe dead, completing the killer's design, and is led away alive but broken.
Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) dies off-screen; Mills survives.
