The Narrator shoots himself through the cheek and Tyler blinks out of existence. But Tyler was never real.
Tyler Durden is revealed to be the Narrator's dissociated alter ego. With Project Mayhem's bombs about to level the credit-card towers, the Narrator realizes the gun in Tyler's hand is really in his own and fires it through his cheek. Tyler, gushing blood from the back of his head, collapses and vanishes. The Narrator survives, and he and Marla watch the buildings fall.
Tyler is a hallucination; his 'death' is the Narrator's psyche reasserting control. The body Pitt plays never physically existed.
