Silent-era megastar Jack Conrad can't survive the transition to sound; audiences laugh at his voice and he's shoved into ensemble parts. In 1932, after his friend George Munn takes his own life, Jack confronts gossip columnist Elinor St. John, who tells him his star has faded but the films will make him immortal. He runs into Fay at a hotel party, learns she's leaving for Europe, returns to his room, and shoots himself; the gunshot is heard from the hallway.
Death comes roughly two hours into the three-hour film, before the Manny and Nellie finale.
